WebFirst off, I'm not sure why everyone in the rock tumbling world uses the term burnish for this. The definition of burnish is "polish (something, especially metal) by rubbing." What we're doing by running soap with the rocks is not polishing them, that's already been done. We are just washing off any residual grit or polish residue from the rocks.
